Some of you even had a problems with installation. The thing is that Google also realize port for Picasa 3 Beta for Linux which you can get here. Great news but only sad thing about it is that thay did not ported Picasa Photo Viewer which is a great peace of Software by it's own (At least I think so). Even more as I expected that the port of Picasa Photo Viewer would happen the same time with as Picasa 3 by google I marked my package non compatible with it. (To avoid useless garbage on your HDD). Well as some of you are having some problems with installation and I wanted to use Edit with picasa button which was broken in the previous build I decided to make another port which will use an actual Picasa Photo Viewer in the Picasa 3 Package with google. It means no garbage on HDD, no dependency on wine (Well Picasa has a modified wine itself), not compatible with Picasa > 3.0. It also shoud replace previous installation, if was one. Of caurse it requires Picasa 3.
I would defenataly advice everyone who used this package before or picasa 2, to move to the Picasa 3.

Updated
I received several questions on how to set Picasa Photo Viewer as a default photo viewer. As most of the people use KDE or GNOME the instructions can be different.
If you are KDE user it's reasonably easy. You have to go to
System Settings > Advanced (tab) > File Associations
There you can set default app per file type
If you are the GNOME user not sure if there some GUI to set default apps for file types, but another simple way can be right click on the file (with file type you want to associate with Picasa Photo Viewer), in the pop-up
Open with > Open with other application... > Use a custom command > PicasaPhotoViewer
Unfortunately that's the step to repeat for each file type you want to associate

THANKS it works!
but if someboy want to use PicasaPhotoViewer as a default program.. it needs to set manualy..
in my case.. right click to a JPEG image, then go to propieties. in the propieties windows go to the "OPEN WITH" tab... and select "PicasaPhotoViewer"... if u dont find the program there.. then press the "+ADD" button, then go to 'use a personalizated command' and type "PicasaPhotoViewer".
I have ubuntu in spanish (i speak spanish).. maybe some instructions are diferent.
Thanks again.. i love Photo Viewer xD
Hi.
Your Rapidshare link is down... it only supported 10 downloads, apparently. Do you have another mirror available for the file?
Thanks, it looks like you've done a great job! Have you shared your work with the Picasa for Linux developers?

Right! Unfortunately I did not found the way to set application as default for image viewing (at least simple way :). Here is the new link
http://rapidshare.de/files/40902938/PicasaPhotoViewer-1.0.2.deb.html
Thanks for interest.
P.S.: I did not contributed back to Google, I don't think there's anything special. But it might sense to do that..
Awesome, thanks so much!!!
If you'd like to share your work with even more people, try here:

A few Picasa for Linux developers are quite active there, and may be interested in what you've accomplished.
P.S.: If you don't like rapidshare's weird restrictions, try filedropper.com. They have a paid plan, but their free service is extremely reliable too, and is free from silly 60-second countdowns. :-)
i agree... u should share your work.. y search everywhere.. and i only foud this here...
everybody want and easy .deb to install.
thanks again..

Finally I got read of this rapidshare and other file sharing services. I guess now there will be no problem downloading the file. link to the file is updated in the post
Thankyooouuu!!!!!!!!
I really like PicasaPhotoViewer, and now I have it on my lap thanks to you.
This is what I love about OpenSource!!!
Great Job!
many many thanks for the updated links.
Thank you very much. It works on my system. By the way, my system is Debian/sid.However, after PicasaPhotoViewer is closed, xulrunner-stub is still running using about 15% cpu.It's not normal, I am sure. But I don't know whether it is related or not.
Thank you again for your great work.
One update.The problem I mentioned in last post is not related to your work.So, never mind.
i'm gutted! I love the Picasa Photo Viewer and have it set as default on Vista and Windows 7, but alas it won't work for me on Ubuntu :(
i'm using x64 ibex if that makes a difference but whenever i try to launch a photo with it i get nothing.
thank you much for this! it works great!finally i have a cool photo viewer...
To make PicasaPhotoViewer the default program for all JPEG files for a particular user, do the following:
1. right click on a JPEG image, then go to properties. in the properties window go to the "OPEN WITH" tab... and select "PicasaPhotoViewer"... if u dont find the program there.. then press the "+ADD" button, then go to 'use a personalizated command' and type "PicasaPhotoViewer".
This creates a PicasaPhotoViewer desktop configuration file in ~/.local/share/applications/
2. edit ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list and change the line beginning with image/jpeg, so that PicasaPhotoViewer is the first application in the list, eg:
image/jpeg=userapp-PicasaPhotoViewer-BL3WOU.desktop;eog.desktop;firefox.desktop;gimp.desktop;thunderbird.desktop;
To make Picasa Photo Viewer the default for ALL users do the following
1. copy the PicasaPhotoViewer desktop configuration file from ~/.local/share/applications/ to /usr/share/applications/PicasaPhotoViewer.desktop
2. add the following lines
MimeType=image/x-bmp;image/bmp;image/gif;image/x-psd;image/x-tga;image/tiff;image/jpeg;image/jpg;image/png;
Icon=PicasaPhotoViewer
3. to tell GNOME to use this desktop configuration file for JPG mime types type the following at the terminal:
xdg-mime default PicasaPhotoViewer.desktop image/jpeg
xdg-mime default PicasaPhotoViewer.desktop image/jpg
This is great! The first time I used the picasa photo viewer I loved it. I had never seen a photo viewer that worked so fast. I have no need for a bloated photo organizer, I just organize myself using directories.
When I moved to Ubuntu, I was bummed I couldn't find a comparable program, until now.
Thanks!
Dear R-Fobic,
The viewer is not running on my system(Ubuntu 8.10(32-bit) Picasa 3 installed)
------------------------------------
I tried it from terminal; getting a message like this.:
------------------------------------
run-detectors: unable to find an interpreter for
/opt/google/picasa/3.0/wine/drive_c/Program
Files/Google/Picasa3/PicasaPhotoViewer.exe
-------------------------------------
Please help me out...
I think you'll need to install Wine:
sudo apt-get install wine
I know Picasa comes with its own internal build of Wine, but it's not accessible to the system by normal means... so Ubuntu doesn't have a program registered to handle .exe files. Once Wine is installed, it will know what to do with the Windows executable.

I can confirm this problem for Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04.
Solution:
Create a Link without spaces to "Program Files" inside /opt/google/picasa/3.0/wine/drive_c
cd /opt/google/picasa/3.0/wine/drive_c
sudo ln -s Program\ Files/ Program_Files
Now edit /usr/bin/PicasaPhotoViewer:
First: Add an underscore to line 9/10:
PicasaPhotoViewer=$Picasa3Path"wine/drive_c/Program_Files/Google/Picasa3/PicasaPhotoViewer.exe"
DefaultImagePath=$Picasa3Path"wine/drive_c/Program_Files/Google/Picasa3/runtime/splashPPV.png"
Second: Change $wineWrapper on line 23 to $WineWrapper (mind the capital W!)
$WineWrapper "$PicasaPhotoViewer" "$imageWinePath"
That solved it for me! So NO wine installation is needed since this is already included by the Picasa Installation.
You can download the new script of the PicasaPhotoViewer from
http://www.caiacoa.de/Transfer/PicasaPhotoViewer
and copy it to /usr/bin/
-caiacoa
@caiacoa
That. Is. Awesome!
Thank you so much for getting this to work once again! I'm using it on 9.04 x64 for anyone wondering, and once set manually it works just as it does in windows!
PicasaPhotoViewer FTW!
Thanks Joey!
To avoid all the stuff I described above I
have created a special Picasa Photo Viewer for Ubuntu package based on this one from Irakli Gozalishvili.
You can find it here:
http://www.caiacoa.de/wiki/index.php/Picasa_Photo_Viewer_(Linux_port)_for_Ubuntu
And many thanks to Irakli again. Great work!
